Press Releases:

ADD/ADHD Drugs under Fire:

· Children on Ritalin have an average of a three-fold increase in the number of chromosomal
abnormalities that may cause cancer, according to a study published in the journal, Cancer Letters.

· The attention-deficit/hyperactivity drug pemoline (brand name Cylert) should be removed from
the market because it has caused liver failure, which has led to transplants and death, said consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen in a petition to the FDA last week. Public Citizen is the organization founded by Ralph Nader over thirty years ago.

· Canada discontinued sales of the attention deficit drug Adderall in February 2005. The drug was linked to sudden heart-related deaths and strokes in children and adults taking the recommended dosage, according the regulatory agency Health Canada.

In The Gift of ADHD (March; New Harbinger Publications), which was published shortly before these facts came to light, clinical psychologist Honos-Webb issued a warning: "In 1900 Freud discovered that cocaine was an effective cure for depression. Similarly, Ritalin and other medications work for children with ADHD-but at what cost? There is currently no science that tells us what the long-term effects are." Now, there is some science and its findings aren't reassuring.

Parents interested in non-medication treatments will find a breakthrough program in Dr. Honos-Webb's book. In it she asserts that kids with ADHD are often exceptionally creative, intuitive, and imaginative. She shows parents how to use these traits to combat the most common behavioral problems associated with ADHD.Dr. Honos-Webb has been interviewed by Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, and national and local television and radio.

"ADHD IS A GIFT, NOT AN ILLNESS"

says Lara Honos-Webb, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist who specializes in
treating kids with ADHD. Why? Because children with it tend to be
exceptionally creative, intuitive, and imaginative. The problem is that our
medical and educational systems allow the difficult ADHD traits like limited
attention span and inability to memorize facts and figures to eclipse the
positive ones*and parents often follow suit leaving their children without
an advocate to fight for their best interests.

In her forthcoming book The Gift of ADHD: How to Transform Your Child's
Problems into Strengths (March 05, New Harbinger Publications) she shows
parents how to maximize their children's unique gifts and how to use them to
correct the behavioral problems that typify ADHD. As importantly, she offers
a fresh perspective on ADHD that de-stigmatizes and demystifies it for
parents. Here's just some of what she has to say:

· ADHD is overdiagnosed. Many kids who are labeled with it actually have
problems that spring from their family and social environments.

· ADHD is largely a diagnosis of convenience that is handed out when a
child doesn't fit the rigid models of behavior and personality that most
school systems impose.

· It's a lot easier--and cheaper--to diagnose a kid with ADHD and put him
on Ritalin, than it is to create an environment that nurtures his unique
gifts.

· Telling exuberant children they have ADHD is like telling women they
have a Penis Deficit Hypermammary Disorder. Differences do not mean
disorders.

· In 1900 Freud discovered that cocaine was an effective cure for
depression. Similarly, Ritalin and other medications work for children with
ADHD*but at what cost? There is currently no science that tells us what the
long-term effects will be.

· The truism "differences are the spice of life" does not hold so true for
psychiatrists and psychologists. For them differences are disorders and many are truly unable to differentiate between a child who is different and one
who is sick.

· ADHD appears to be an American illness. For every two hundred and fifty
children diagnosed and treated for ADHD, only one child would similarly have
been diagnosed and treated in all of Germany, England, France, and Italy
combined.

· If ADHD is really a gift, not only are we hurting these kids by calling
them disordered, we're depriving the world of their much needed gifts of
creativity, exuberance and intuition.
