9. Emotional Bingo
Create a Bingo card made up emotion words. The card can have 5 squares
across and 5 squares down the side. Write in the following emotions: sad,
mad, scared, happy, silly, excited, surprised, jealous, bored, hopeful,
lonely, ashamed, disgusted, tired, confident, shy, disappointed, strong,
calm, confused, depressed, fearful, defeated, graceful, and insecure. On a
weekend day, distribute the Bingo Cards and ask every family member to cross
off the box of any emotion they feel that day. Each person should carry the
bingo card with them through the whole day. If any person gets all boxes
crossed off in a vertical, horizontal or diagonal line, they call out Bingo
and win the game if they are the first to do so. You should prepare a prize
for the winner, which could be a book, video or CD for example.
This game will help your child get familiar with all the nuances of
positive and negative emotions. It will help her attend to her inner world
and put labels on her inner experience. It will also promote connection
among family members and an opportunity to share experiences and emotions.
10. Social Skills Bingo
This will help your child gain the emotional skill of being intensely
curious about other people and will help transform social awkwardness and
impulsiveness. Your child with ADHD may have a very difficult time listening
to others, and may often interact with others by blurting out what's on her
mind without paying attention to what's going on in others. For this
activity, create a Bingo Card with the following words in each of the 25
squares: favorite toy, favorite animal, favorite color, favorite class,
favorite sport, favorite book, favorite movie star, favorite band, favorite
music, favorite game, favorite vacation spot, favorite cartoon, favorite
store, favorite tv show, favorite movie, favorite video game, favorite song,
favorite season, favorite sports star, favorite web site, favorite teacher,
favorite family activity, favorite sports team, favorite holiday, and
favorite technology.
Give your child this card and tell her to think about asking other kids at
school what their favorites are. Each time she asks another child about a
favorite on the bingo card, she tells his parents about it at home and they
cross of the square. When the child gets a Bingo! (horizontal, vertical or
horizontal line crossed off) she wins a prize. This will encourage your
child to begin thinking about what other people's interests are. The whole
family can join in and play if that will make it more fun for your ADHD
child.
